QQQ vs NQ/MNQ: why use it as a proxy before trading Nasdaq-100 futures
Same Nasdaq-100 basket, different mechanics and tax treatment — and why QQQ is the options window you're missing if you only watch the futures.

Notional size per contract — NQ vs MNQ
MNQ is exactly 1/10 the size of NQ: $2 per Nasdaq-100 point versus $20. Both are regulated futures contracts on the same index, cash-settled — the only difference is how much money each point moves.
QQQ isn't exactly 1/10 of the index
Unlike SPY (designed to trade near 1/10 of the S&P 500), QQQ trades around 1/41 of the Nasdaq-100 (NDX) level — and that ratio drifts over time. If you're comparing gamma or support/resistance levels published in NDX points against QQQ's price, don't use a fixed rule — check the day's actual ratio.
Why look at QQQ to trade NQ or MNQ?
NQ and MNQ can be traded directly as futures — unlike SPX, you don't need options here to take a position. But most of the Nasdaq-100's options flow and dealer hedging lives in QQQ, not in the futures contract itself — and that hedging pushes on the same effective index price.
Arbitrage keeps them locked — with a basis worth watching
QQQ, NDX, and the NQ/MNQ futures all reference the same Nasdaq-100 basket, and authorized participants arbitrage QQQ against that basket. But unlike SPY/SPX, NQ trades at a premium or discount to cash NDX from the cost of carry (interest rate minus dividends), which shifts as expiration approaches — don't assume 1:1 parity between the future and the index.
QQQ has the options depth the futures book doesn't expose the same way
QQQ is, after SPY, the ETF with the largest options volume in the world — most of the Nasdaq-100's retail flow and dealer hedging lives there. That depth of data isn't as visible just watching the futures order book.
Nasdaq-100 concentration isn't S&P 500 concentration
The index is far more concentrated in a handful of megacap tech names. A large move in a single position can move QQQ — and through arbitrage, NQ/MNQ — more than an equivalent stock would move the S&P 500. Watching those megacaps' options flow is part of reading QQQ.
No single instrument clearly leads here
In SPX/SPY, SPX's institutional book usually sets the day's structure. In the Nasdaq-100, institutional hedging is split across NQ, QQQ options, and individual megacap flow — there's no single dominant book. That's why it pays to watch all three together, not just one.
Frequently asked questions
Is trading QQQ the same as trading NQ or MNQ?
No. QQQ trades as a stock or through options on that stock; NQ and MNQ are futures contracts taken directly, with no options required, cash-settled at close or expiration.
Are taxes the same for QQQ and NQ/MNQ?
Not in the United States. NQ and MNQ, as regulated futures contracts, automatically receive Section 1256 treatment: a 60/40 split between long- and short-term gains regardless of how long you held the position, and exemption from the wash sale rule. QQQ shares or options are taxed like any regular stock. Here the tax advantage belongs to the futures contract, not the proxy. Always check with a professional.
Why look at QQQ if NQ and MNQ can already be traded directly?
Because most of the Nasdaq-100's options flow and dealer hedging lives in QQQ, not in the futures contract. That information helps anticipate where price is likely to find support or resistance before it shows up in NQ or MNQ.
Does MNQ get the same tax advantage as NQ?
Yes. Micro futures (MNQ, MES, and similar) are regulated futures contracts just like their full-size versions, and receive the same Section 1256 60/40 treatment.
Why does the Nasdaq-100 move differently than the S&P 500?
Because of concentration: a handful of megacap tech names carry far more weight in the index, so their individual options flow can move QQQ — and through arbitrage, NQ/MNQ — more than an equivalent stock would move the S&P 500.

Illustrative example — same profit, two tax treatments
- Profit on NQ/MNQ (hypothetical)
- $50,000
- NQ/MNQ — 60/40 under Section 1256
- ≈ $13,000 in taxes
- Same profit on QQQ options — 100% short-term, 35% bracket
- $17,500 in taxes
Illustrative calculation based on current US federal tax brackets. Options and futures tax treatment depends on your personal situation, residency, and broker — this is not tax advice. Always check with a professional.
Other correlations worth watching
The Nasdaq's own volatility gauge
Measures implied volatility from Nasdaq-100 options — the Nasdaq can run its own volatility regime, different from what the VIX shows for the S&P 500.
The options flow of a handful of names
AAPL, MSFT, NVDA, AMZN, GOOGL, and META make up an outsized share of the index — their individual options flow can move QQQ and NQ/MNQ more than the rest of the index combined.
The futures premium over the index
NQ trades at a basis (premium or discount) to cash NDX that shifts with interest rates and time to expiration — watch it before comparing levels between the future and the index.
The sector that often leads
The Nasdaq-100 carries heavy semiconductor weight — the sector often leads or amplifies the index's moves.
